She said it looked more dynamic.

You are so right about the book cover thing. If a book with a white model is on the cover and it doesn't sell well, it's not because the model is white.Najelahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03529650047480022627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6180270161844980828.post-39046182314151762222010-07-08T01:28:44.316-04:002010-07-08T01:28:44.316-04:00You crushed this. One YA cover that I loved this year was the Guardian by Karen Healey

The books has a diverse cast, its influenced by Maori mythology and the main protagonist is a White female. But there isn't a White girl on the cover.

Instead they decided to go with a White Mask, which plays a large part in the story line.

This cover quickly got my attention because it wasn't more of the same.

And I loved Guardian.Dorethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08676911030014718403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6180270161844980828.post-78060973692748652572010-07-07T16:58:25.546-04:002010-07-07T16:58:25.546-04:00i am SO HAPPY that someone made this point about t...i am SO HAPPY that someone made this point about the WOMAN AS BACKGROUND.

seriously, this is an excellent post all around but that part especially - jumping up and down. I'm Caucasian, and seeing GOOD POC covers always makes me skip with delight. I'm quite sick of the Kelley Armstrongesque covers.Emmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17546668298255186342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6180270161844980828.post-83385792946599897032010-07-07T07:02:17.868-04:002010-07-07T07:02:17.868-04:00Nope I think you're probably right that books ...Nope I think you're probably right that books with Asian faces on the front are overwhelmingly by white authors. Everytime I think 'Oh remember that book, with the Asian girl on the cover' it seems to be by a white author. At one of the many posts someone talked about Lian Hearn's 'Otori' covers as a sign that the Brit market is more progressive and hurray yes there are Asian characters on the cover, but Lian Hearn is a pen name for a white author.

I thought 'Binu and the Great Wall' was another exception, but seems I'm remembering wrong as that features a silhouette.Jodiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11462660276240016464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6180270161844980828.post-44082944404195259762010-07-06T23:34:31.415-04:002010-07-06T23:34:31.415-04:00We've emailed and sent Tweets about this so I ...We've emailed and sent Tweets about this so I don't really have much to contribute in my comment.

Tocueh, if a book with a white girl on the cover doesn't sell well, it's never because of the girl on the cover. SO FRUSTRATING.

I kinda want to create some kind of gadget that counts how many covers you can find with defiant Asian women on them with no fans of flowers on the covers. But the numbers would probably be too depressing.

We need more people to get in publishing (like you) to challenge the status quo!

I'm glad you took that break, we all need it to calm down and cry a little bit ;)MissAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11042352415616854651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6180270161844980828.post-63269537921834827422010-07-06T21:02:00.096-04:002010-07-06T21:02:00.096-04:00ARGH.
